What is Your Why?

We have been updating our website for a couple weeks, and it’s finally live. I especially hope you’ll check out Our Purpose, which describes our “3% for hungry kids” pledge.  Then I hope you’ll tell all your friends about it.

I saw a TED Talk a few years ago given by a man named Simon Sinek.  In a nutshell, it was about finding “your purpose” and expressing it in your conversations with others.  If you haven’t already, you should watch it.  It’s only 18 minutes.  Needless to say, I really liked the video and ended up buying Sinek’s book.  Like most books I enjoy, this one left me thinking, “Hmm. It feels like I already knew that but didn’t know how to say it.”  Someday I’ll write a longer review of it here.  In the meantime, go read it (or listen to it).

So, while we were in the process of forming this company, I kept wondering, “But why are we doing this?”  I mean, it would be easier to go find a regular job than to start a company, right?  Then when I learned my 10-year-old daughter was taking extra snacks to school for the kid that didn’t have any, it hit me like a blinding flash of the obvious.

Now I spend a significant amount of time thinking about hungry children and how much difference food can make in their lives. We no longer wonder why we’re doing this instead of just finding a good job somewhere else.  Our purpose is to help someone who cannot help themselves.  While there are definitely many people who need help, children are least able to help themselves.

We’re still working with the local food agency on the details, and we will post here, and update Our Purpose, once we’ve finalized that.

In the meantime, check out the rest of our new site, let us know about any typos you find, and think about your own “why”.
